Good Things Cafe; Waffle On

They say good things come to those who wait. Nestled amongst the quiet streets of Mosman Park lies Good Things Cafe. It had been on my list of go-to places for quite some time, so I hoped it was worth the wait.

The decor is simplistic and beautiful in a minimalistic way; light coloured wood, white walls and a mural across the wall with plenty of natural lighting flooding the place.

Acai, Blueberry, Mango & Apple Juice ($9)

To accompany our meal, we ordered the acai smoothie which they blend up fresh to order. It was a thick concoction with a rich berry flavour and the perfect amount of light sweetness from the mango and apple.

One thing that my husband and I share in common is our weakness for waffles. So it was no surprise that we both chose a waffle dish; one as the “main course” and the other for “dessert”.

Southern Fried Chicken, Waffles, Chilli Butterscotch & Maple Bacon ($23)

At Good Things they recommend that you add a side of maple bacon with the fried chicken and waffles, we decided to go all out and followed order. Who counts calories when there are waffles at stake? The star of the dish was definitely the fried chicken, it was hot and juicy on the inside and perfectly crunchy on the outside. Paired with the sweet and salty maple bacon and fluffy waffles, it was mouthwatering deliciousness on a plate. The chilli butterscotch sauce elevated the whole dish and bridged all the elements together.

Waffles, Saffron Poached Pears, Berry Compote, Chai Mascarpone, Chai Syrup, Choc Pop Rocks & Passionfruit Dust ($18)

After eating the first amazing waffle dish, our expectations were high. But unfortunately, we were a bit underwhelmed with the second dish. I would have preferred the chai flavour to be more subtle, it was too strong and over-bearing for my liking. However, the pears were sticky, sweet and poached to perfection. The berry compote was tangy and added a bit of zing, as well as the nice surprise of the choc rocks popping in your mouth. I could not taste the passionfruit dust which was drowned out by all the other flavours.

The colourful plates and dishes that swing between interesting and comfort food are more than enough reason to visit Good Things. The fried chicken and waffles are definitely a must-try, and the cafe vibe is friendly and relaxed. It’s all good.
