Layup; A Crackling Brunch Game

Layup is the name, brunch is the game. Brunch is that meal right in between breakfast and lunch; it is the perfect excuse to be able to eat pretty much anything you want. This seems to be the mantra followed by Layup who have a killer all-day brunch menu.

I am usually decisive when it comes to picking dishes.. but there were so many drool-worthy options it proved difficult to only select a few. But you had me at pork crackling

Spiced Fried Chicken, House-Made Pork Crackle, Watermelon & Herb Salad ($22)

Sweet – tick. Salty – tick. Spice – tick. Crackling – double tick. This dish really had it all and was sinfully delicious! Boy, that crackling sure was good and the star of the dish.. you could hear that crunch from miles away! A lot of moreish elements (pork crackling and fried chicken combined in one dish – calories galore), but freshness came through from the juicy watermelon tossed through the herb salad. Only minor thing was that the watermelon could have been sweeter, then it could have been perfect.

Slow Roasted Pork Belly, Miso Caramel, Beetroot Gel, Chargrilled Asparagus ($24)

And.. another pork dish.. with more crackling. Can you tell by now my true love for crackling? The pork belly was so tender and just melted in your mouth. Once again, the crackling on top was on point. Aside from the pork, the hero of this dish would also have to be that miso caramel sauce; so deliciously thick, gooey and sweet. The beetroot gel provided a hint of acidity to balance it all off, and the asparagus made you feel a little bit less guilty.

Brioche Donut Balls, Salted Caramel, Orange Zest Chantilly Cream, Crushed Pistachios, Shaved Chocolate, Candied Citrus ($18)

Of course we had to end it all on a sweet note. There weren’t too many sweet options on the menu.. so we decided to go with the donuts. Being brioche donuts, I expected them to be fluffy and soft.. but in actual fact, they tasted like regular donuts to me. I was also a little bit disappointed there was no filling inside the donuts. Overall, the dish was well balanced and not too sweet.. the rich, velvety salted caramel was cut through by the luscious, zesty orange chantilly cream. And the crushed pistachios were a great textural element.

Three words to describe the amazing brunch at Layup; glutinous but glorious! Brunch game is definitely strong at Layup.. easily one of my new favourite places!
